The township borders the Cumberland County municipalities of Downe Township, Fairfield Township, Millville, and the Delaware Bay. Other unincorporated communities, localities and place names located partially or completely within the township include Jones Island, Lummis Mill, Lummistown and Sayres Neck. Lawrence Township was incorporated as a township by an act of the New Jersey Legislature on February 17, 1885, from portions of Fairfield Township. As of the 2010 United States Census, the township's population was 3,290, reflecting an increase of 569 (+20.9%) from the 2,721 counted in the 2000 Census, which had in turn increased by 288 (+11.8%) from the 2,433 counted in the 1990 Census.
